Joan Gaspar is a Barcelona-based industrial designer, born in 1966. He studied industrial design at the School of Artes y Oficios in Barcelona, before beginning work with VAPOR S.A. in 1988, producing minimalist lamps. From 1992, he began collaborating with a range of companies on new product lines, including Roca, Resol, Marset, Mobles 114, Santa & Cole, DAE, and Made Design.
Gaspar has worked closely with Marset since 1996, developing new products and contributing to product direction for the brand. His designs for Marset include collections such as Ginger, Djembé, Mercer, Atlas, Plaff-on!, and Zenc, each showing his interest in simple forms, good proportions, and light that feels considered rather than decorative for its own sake. His Atlas and Neón de Luz designs were both awarded the Delta de Plata.
Alongside his design practice, Gaspar has taught materials and technology applied to industrial design at Elisava School in Barcelona, and opened his own professional studio in 2002. His work is grounded in simplicity, but not in the sense of being basic. It is more about reducing an object until the form, material, and light feel resolved.
"To me, value lies in simplicity, in something that is well made, that lasts for years. Being simple does not mean that the process of getting there is simple. It can actually be very complex" - Joan Gaspar
